CBD and cancer – research and use
Our bodies contain millions of cells. Many of these cells are dying, while others are dividing and growing at any point in time. The process by which these cells die normally is called apoptosis. This is a form of cellular without inflammation. There are genes in the human body that work as tumor suppressants that keep the cells in check, allowing them to die when necessary and only grow to the point they need to. When these genes alter in any way, the cells in body grow abnormally and this is what results in the various types of tumors to grow.
How does cancer form?
The cells in the body go through a stage called hyperplasia. During this stage the cancer cells grow and multiply. The second phase is known as dysplasia. The cells start forming in to a tumor which then starts causing issues with the surrounding cells. In the fourth phase, the cancer cells continue to grow and start to invade the surrounding cells. In the fifth phase, metastasis, the cancer cells spread through the body through the bloodstream or the lymphatic system. Then then tend to take up residence in other areas of the body and start to divide and reproduce once more. Cancer can form from various issues and no one factor has been identified as the reason for cancer cells forming in the body.
Treatments for cancer
Current established treatments for cancer include surgery, stem cell transplants, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. CBD may add another treatment in to the arsenal for fighting cancers.
What is CBD?
CBD is cannabidiol, a cannabinoid extracted from the cannabis plant. This extract has shown significant positive results in treatment of various mental and physical illnesses and ailments, including cancer. The cannabinoid receptors in our own bodies are stimulated by the CBD which then works to regulate the body. This means CBD can work for almost for many aspects of health including heart health, mental health, reproduction, metabolism, neural activity as well as the immune system.
How is CBD used?
CBD can be ingested orally, blended with creams and oils for external use, vaporized, applied topically and even used as a suppository. So far, cannabidiol has not shown evidence of toxicity or any severe side effects including addiction. Cannabidiol is a cannabinoid that effectively works with the receptors in the endocannabinoid system in our bodies, stimulating our body to achieve homeostasis. This means that CBD can be used to treat a number of ailments such as inflammation, chronic pain, epilepsy, mental disorders, migraines, PTSD, PCD, depression, diabetes, Alzheimers, cancer and many others. CBD has also proved effective in treating symptoms of withdrawal to reduce the effects as well as negate the associated cravings.
How is CBD used for cancer treatment?
Cannabinoids effect the CB1 and CB2 receptors in our body. CBD disrupts part of the cancer cells by changing the calcium metabolism and effectively destroys the digestive system of the cancer cell. This prevents the cells from growing and dividing and could also cause the cell to die. There are a number of other processes involved which ultimately results in changes to the cancer cells. Healthy cells do not react to the CBD in the same way.
Does the research back this up?
The research to date shows that CBD may have the potential to actually switch off the DNA that causes certain types of cancer. In other research CBD has been used effectively to treat aggressive cancers such as brain cancer. CBD can slow down the cancer cell’s growth and actually cause a non-inflammatory death as would happen normally in the body as cells are replaced. CBD also reduces pain and inflammation and restricts blood flow to the tumors, again starting them of nutrients they need to grow and spread. While the effects of both THC and CBD are being investigated, CBD shows more potential due to the lack of side effects and anti-psychoactive properties.
At this point CBD is one of the only new potential treatments for cancer as there has been minimal improvement in the treatments available over the last few decades. While more research is required, CBD shows many positive results and potential in treating cancer successfully.
